What Can I Do?

In their bookWhat can one person do?  Sabina Alkire and Edmund Newell suggest seven actions that will make a real impact on extreme poverty.

  • Pray: Hold people and situations in prayer.

  • Study: Lead a study group or discussion group on poverty using this book or another.

  • Give: Give 0.7% of your income towards the MDGs and teach others to do so.

  • Connect: Spend time abroad volunteering or visiting to connect with the impoverished.

  • Raise Awareness: Organize a concert or other public event to raise awareness and funds.

  • Take Action: Take part in a direct action - e.g. wear a white band on December 10 2005.

  • Advocate: Write to, or meet, your representative to urge them to address global poverty.

The authors explain the choices in this way:

What surprised us might surprise you... Some of these are the same actions that we’ve been hearing about since childhood. They seemed rather underwhelming and uninspiring to start with, while we wanted to be new and different. But when we went back to the evidence we learned something: if used with strategic cunning these actions can be  important, and will make a difference. In the book we explain when each action is strategic, so you know precisely why we’ve chosen it and when and how to do it.
